A while back, we heard Epics Games say that the next-gen consoles will not be powerful enough to use the full potential of their upcoming Unreal 4 Engine. Considering the statement they gave then, it’s not such a big surprise to hear that Unreal 4 engine will not be supporting Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U. It won’t support the old-gen consoles, like PS3 and Xbox360, either.
Unreal 3 engine
Epics games thinks that the latest version of Unreal 3 engine will be enough to take advantage of the power of the Wii U, which Nintendo themselves have said that it’s only about 50% faster than the older PS3 and Xbox360 consoles. This is why it made no sense for them for support the Wii U. And it makes even less sense to support the old consoles with Unreal 4 engine when even the new consoles will barely show its potential.
“Unreal Engine 3 doesn’t disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That’s really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it’s powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.”
The truth is, if a developer wanted to take an Unreal Engine game and put it on Wii U, they could, Unreal Engine 3 is kicking ass on Wii U. The best games on Wii U are made on our technology. What more do you want from us?”
Unreal 4 engine
The new Unreal 4 engine will send us in a new age of gaming graphics, along with the new PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Epic Games have shown a demo of it, and it looks like CGI from a movie not too many years ago. The demo below is how the graphics a game could actually look like, but it’s recorded, so it’s doesn’t happen in real time. It is not, however, just an intro for a game. Plus, this is just a demo based on what the Epic Games engineers could do, but I’m sure we’ll see much better looking games in the future, too, by the time Unreal 5 engine comes out.
