Many of you might have heard of Project Ara or Phonebloks but rather, do not know much about it. Here, I am going to talk about the Phonebloks project and Project Ara. Firstly, let’s talk about Phonebloks. Some time ago, Phonebloks announced it’s brilliant idea about modular phone technology, but not many people were interested in it. So, Phonebloks released the following video:
This video inspired many people because it explained the concept of the Phonebloks project on which I am going to go in detail below.
The Problem
Now, this is the main reason why the Phonebloks project was initiated. Phones are not built to last. It lasts only a couple of years before it breaks or becomes inferior to newer and better phones which are released after some time. Much like the iPhone series. However, although it’s often just one part that killed it, we throw everything away because it’s almost impossible to repair or upgrade. Because of this, electronic waste is one of the leading forms of waste in the world. So, what can we do to overcome this problem?
The Solution
This is the idea that Phonebloks thought of. As said before, since it is only one part of the device that affects it, we throw out the whole device instead of just replacing the part that affects it. Phonebloks is made out of detachable bloks. The bloks are connected to the base which locks everything together into a solid phone. If a blok breaks you can easily replace it; if it’s getting old just upgrade.
Blokstore
The Blokstore is like an app store for hardware. In the store, you can buy your bloks, read reviews and sell old bloks. Small and big companies develop and sell their bloks. You can buy a pre-assembled phone or assemble it yourself by selecting the brands you want to support. The choice is yours for building the ultimate phone.
Motorola
So, how does Motorola come into all this? Motorola is now owned by Google and is famous for building the very first cellphone. It seems that Motorola has been working with PhoneBloks for over a year now, discretely. They have renamed the PhoneBloks project into Project Ara. After Motorola announced it’s co-operation with PhoneBloks, PhoneBloks released the following video:
As you all can see, Motorola needs our voice for their support and success of this project. Will it become a success? only time can tell.
